The grounds at Kerio View Lodge, with thatched bandas and murram paths under the trees
Iten · Elgeyo Marakwet · Kenya

A thousand metres of valley, and nothing in the way.

Kerio View sits on the lip of the escarpment, where the highlands stop and the Rift Valley drops away. Come for the running, the paragliding, or simply the fact that the view never quite becomes ordinary.

Rooms & bandas
Four types

Sleep on the edge

Bandas and rooms with African-themed decor, hot water, and WIFI that actually reaches the bed.

Eat all day

A full meal or a plate of chips at four in the afternoon. The restaurant runs fifteen hours.

Train at altitude

The gym is open to everyone. The person on the next machine may well have Olympic gold at home.

Then look up

Paragliders launch from the ridge, raptors ride the same thermals, and the valley changes hourly.

The lodge

Built facing the drop, on purpose.

Everything here points one way. The terrace, the bar, the bandas, even the breakfast tables - all of it is arranged so the Kerio Valley stays in frame while you get on with your day.

It is a working lodge rather than a resort: unfussy rooms, a kitchen that knows what it is doing, and staff who have watched a lot of people arrive tired and leave slower.

Iten, 2,000 m

The town that produces champions is ten minutes up the road.

Iten's dirt roads have made more world and Olympic medallists than most countries manage. Runners come here from everywhere to train thin air into speed - and a good number of them eat here afterwards.

You do not need to be one of them. The gym, the trails and the altitude are open to anyone who wants a go.

“You come for one night because it is on the way somewhere. You stay three because it turns out it wasn't.”
